Seattle, Washington is a spectacular vacation destination nestled in the northwest corner of the United States in the region known as the Pacific Northwest. Seattle is famous for many things; among them- coffee culture, music, theatre, and the arts. Visitors to Seattle and the Pacific Northwest can choose from myriad entertainment attractions while in the area. Seattle is home to famous attractions such as the first Starbucks location, the Pike Street Market, the Jimi Hendrix Experience Music Project, and much, much more. And these compelling attractions come in addition to the magnificent scenery on display in this coastal center known as the Emerald City.
There really are too many interesting sites featured in Seattle Washington to be featured in any one "attractions" list. However, there are some A-list attractions that are simply “must-see’s” and “must-do’s” for Seattle visitors. Listed below are some of Seattle’s most exciting, entertaining and engaging attractions:
The Pike Place Market:
This is one of Seattle’s oldest and most celebrated attractions. At the Pike Place Market you can meander through an open-air marketplace perched next to the majestic Pacific Ocean. Pike Place Market is famous for its “flying fish” shows. Why just buy seafood the old-fashioned way when you can see people toss fish to and fro to fill customers’ orders? Pike Place is also home to numerous unique arts and crafts stores and small cafés and delis.
The Space Needle:
This is by far Seattle’s most famous and recognizable landmark. No photo of the Seattle skyline would be compete without the Space Needle. Originally built as part of Seattle’s world fair in the 1960’s, this stunning tower now takes locals and Seattle tourists alike on a 41 second journey skyward aboard one of three glass elevators. Not only does the view at the top make it worth the price of admission, but up top you can also enjoy excellent dining and the SkyCafe and the SkyCity kitchen.
The First Starbucks:
Pike Street is famous for more than the Pike Place Market and stunning views of the waterfront; it’s also home to the very first Starbucks location. It’s hard to believe that a world-wide franchise now boasting tens of thousands of stores all began at this quaint little location on Pike Street- but it did. Before Howard Shultz bought the store it was run by a couple of college students. Come see where it all began. Then stroll along Pike Street with cappuccino in hand!
The Jimi Hendrix Experience Music Project:
One of the two founders of Microsoft, Paul Allen, decided to use a few of his millions to build an interactive, musical museum in tribute to one of his musical heroes- Jimi Hendrix. Everything from the architecture (which is decidedly postmodern!) to the interactive entertainment inside is extraordinary. Whether or not you’re a Jimi Hendrix fan, this Seattle attractions is a must see.
These attractions listed above are just a few of the most famous in and around the Seattle area. Some less well-known attractions include: the Seattle Aquarium, Tillicum Village, the Seattle Art Museum, the Pacific Science Center, the Museum of Glass, the Museum of Flight, and the Woodland Park Zoo. Being a coastal city, Seattle also serves as the perfect hub for extra, sea-based traveling. Seattle visitors have numerous water-transportation to choose from. The Washington State ferries are one; the Seattle-Victoria Clipper is another; and Argosy Cruises are a third. Speaking of transportation, the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train is another popular and scenic tour option.
